De-aging movie stars – A CGI trick that never gets old

We have all seen movies where we think, how did this actor/actress manage to look so different here? What anti-aging pills are they on? Where did all the body fat go?

Well, in some cases it takes real hard work to undergo a massive transformation (Christian Bale in The Machinist), and then there is the magic that CGI and VFX brings to screen.

Want to know better with examples? We’ll give you many instances where the actors revamped their looks totally to suit the character and story through CGI:

Kurt Russel in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

In the flashback scenes of the Star Lord’s parents, the younger Kurt Russel sure looks convincing enough to take us on a time travel to his younger days.

Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War

This is the most popular visual effect which is being discussed ever since the movie came out. The flashback scene with two Robert Downeys in a frame has got people on the edge!

Shahrukh Khan in FAN

The de-aging process is not exclusive to Hollywood movies. In the movie FAN, the CGI effect left the audience surprised. Shahrukh Khan portrays the role of Gaurav in the movie, who is supposed to be his lookalike in the film. So obviously, the film is full of CGI tricks.

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

In the fifth edition of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the team uses some serious CGI magic to turn Johnny Depp into his young self. The complex process involved literally combining Johnny Depp’s performance with the body of a younger actor.

Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This is a case of not just de-aging but going on a time travel of looks and age through the power of CGI. What makes it more impressive is the fact that this was done a decade ago.

Michael Douglas in Ant-Man

Michael Douglas is de-aged in Ant-Man, during a flashback scene. Lola Visual Effects, the company that specialises in ‘visual cosmetics’ for Hollywood did this digital face-lift flawlessly.
