But gaming has a strong history where generations have grown up playing some of the most memorable games of our generation. Here is our list of the top ten games of our times.
Pac-Man
When Namco released Pac-Man in the year 1980, no one would have imagined that it would go on to sell more than seven million copies worldwide and become the bestselling video game up until that time. The game used a modest 4KB ROM cartridge, chosen for its lower manufacturing costs, which required a simple Zilog Z80 CPU microprocessor.
Super Mario
Super Mario Bros. is a cross-platform video game developed by Nintendo. The game has been called the greatest game of all time, as it aided in resurrecting a near-dead American video game market. It was the bestselling game of all time for approximately three decades at over 40 million copies sold.
Need for Speed (NFS)
Electronic Arts released NFS, a series of racing video games, that went on to become the most successful racing video game series in the world, with over 140 million copies of games in the series sold to date.
Minecraft
In 2009, Mojang Games released its flagship product Minecraft, which has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. Minecraft allows its players to build installations out of textured cubes in a 3D generated environment. Besides construction, exploration, gathering resources, crafting, and combat are some of the other activities featured in the strategy game.
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is a massively popular, multiplayer, online, role-playing game (MMORPG) created in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. World of Warcraft is currently the world’s most-subscribed MMORPG With over seven million subscribers, the game holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscriber base. It is also the highest grossing video game of all time.
The Sims
The Sims is a strategic, life simulation video game developed by The Sims Studio and published by Electronic Arts. The Sims 3 sold 1.4 million copies in its first week. Since then, it has sold ten million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling PC games of all time.
Half-Life
Half-Life, and its sequel, is a first-person, shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation. The game was widely acclaimed for its advanced physics, animation, sound, graphics, and narrative. The Half-Life series has sold over 32 million copies
Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure video game series developed by Rockstar Games. The third part in the release, Grand Theft Auto III brought the series to a 3D setting and made it a more coherent experience, becoming a landmark in the progression of video game technology. The game has sold over 150 million copies and the end of its popularity is nowhere in sight.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a 2011 first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer Games. The game sold over 26.5 million copies so far.
StarCraft
StarCraft is a military science fiction, real-time strategy video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Having sold over 11 million copies, Starcraft was hailed for having raised the bar for developing real-time strategy games.
